What it does
PNC’s online and mobile banking provide account balances, transfers, activity alerts and card controls. Easy Lock temporarily stops new card transactions, while mobile check deposits require the app. Simple Checking offers a US account with no overdraft fees and several monthly-fee waiver routes.
For a misplaced card, sign in to PNC Online Banking or the mobile app, select the debit or credit card, and choose its lock button. PNC Easy Lock stops new purchases, cash advances and withdrawals until you turn the lock off. Recurring merchant transactions may still go through. Locking is a temporary control and does not replace reporting a card lost or stolen.
Simple Checking costs
Simple Checking costs US$5 per month, waived with any qualifying direct deposit or when the account holder is under 25 or at least 62. A qualifying deposit is recurring income, such as wages or a pension, sent by an employer or outside agency. Person-to-person transfers, ordinary account transfers and cash or mobile deposits do not meet that condition.
There is no minimum deposit to open online and no overdraft fee. Most payments exceeding the available balance are declined, although a previously authorised payment can still create a negative balance when its final amount is larger. That can happen with a petrol-station preauthorisation, for example.
Opening and using the account
PNC’s online application route for adults requires an SSN or ITIN and accepted identification. Applicants aged 14 to 17 can apply online with an adult co-applicant. The student banking center provides an appointment route for younger applicants and people who need help with identification requirements.
Once the account is open and funded, online and mobile access are available. Both channels handle balance checks, alerts and transfers; check photographs must be submitted through the app. PNC recommends a currently supported browser for online banking because older or beta versions can limit functions, including Bill Pay.
Strengths
- Easy Lock can be switched on and off through either digital channel.
- Simple Checking has no overdraft fee or minimum online opening deposit.
- PNC distinguishes browser tasks from app-only check deposits.
Watch out for
- Recurring merchant charges may continue while a card is locked.
- Ordinary account transfers do not qualify for the direct-deposit fee waiver.
Best for
- PNC customers switching between browser and mobile banking
- US account holders who want reversible controls for a misplaced card
