What it does
Poly Haven publishes HDRIs, texture materials and 3D models under CC0. Its public asset library allows downloading without a signup or paywall.
Poly Haven supplies three connected parts of a scene: unclipped HDRIs for lighting, scanned PBR textures for surfaces and 3D models. Its HDRIs are equirectangular environments with 16K or higher source resolution; the texture collection uses photoscanned seamless materials at 8K or higher.
The diffuse textures are albedo maps with lighting removed as far as possible, so the renderer supplies the shading. Separate ambient-occlusion maps can add small-scale shadow detail where a workflow needs it. HDR and EXR are the high-dynamic-range image formats discussed for lighting, rather than ordinary 8-bit JPG or PNG images.
Public assets download without an account or payment. Their CC0 licence permits commercial work, modification and redistribution, including handing raw assets to a client or packaging them with a project; attribution is optional. Model and texture ZIPs are assembled in the browser. Download-manager extensions and Firefox's setting to clear all site data on close can interfere with that process.
Strengths
- CC0 allows raw assets to travel with a shared or commercial project.
- Downloads are available without signup or a paywall.
- HDRIs are unclipped, and PBR albedo maps avoid baked-in lighting.
Watch out for
- Browser settings or download extensions can interfere with generated model and texture ZIPs.
Best for
- Artists lighting scenes with HDR environments
- Teams sharing complete 3D project assets
