What it does

Odyssey adds 2D painting, vector drawing, animation and storyboards to Unreal Engine. Painted textures and drawings can participate directly in a hybrid 2D and 3D scene.

Create a texture at the right size

Choose Texture from the Odyssey submenu, then set the asset name, pixel dimensions, format, background and initial raster or vector layer. The dimensions cannot be changed afterwards. External images can become additional layers; importing another Texture 2D requires matching dimensions because that route has no resize control.

Paint a prop's texture in the dedicated editor or use the mesh painter's Texture, Mesh and Screen modes. These provide different relationships between the drawing, the object's surface and the current viewpoint.

Export Texture in the Content Browser, or the editor's File menu, writes PNG, BMP, TGA or JPEG. Individual layers can also become separate texture assets inside the project.

Odyssey is now a free plugin, replacing its former standalone distribution. It requires Unreal Engine 5.6 or later on Windows or Mac; the host engine has separate licensing and hardware requirements.

Strengths

  • Painted assets remain inside the Unreal Engine project
  • Layers can become separate texture assets for reuse

Watch out for

  • Texture dimensions must be chosen before painting
  • The workflow requires an Unreal Engine installation

Best for

  • Hand-painted assets in Unreal Engine productions
