What it does
PrimeVue is a Vue component suite covering data tables, charts, dialogs, menus and other application controls. Its theming architecture supports shared design tokens, presets and per-component overrides.
PrimeVue combines Vue controls with themes built from shared design tokens. In a Vite project, install the package, register the PrimeVue application plugin, choose a theme such as Aura and supply a PrimeUI licence key. Components can then be imported individually.
The token system separates raw values, shared meanings and component-specific settings. For example, a button colour can follow a semantic primary colour that points to a palette value. Dark mode follows the system by default; darkModeSelector can instead use a class controlled by your application. PrimeVue 5 assumes a 16px root font size, with temporary compatibility presets for older 14px layouts.
Licensing changed with PrimeVue 5. Eligible individuals and small organizations can register for a free Community licence, renewed annually. Organizations must have fewer than five developers and fewer than ten employees and meet revenue, budget and funding limits; public-sector bodies and educational institutions are excluded. Commercial per-developer licences provide perpetual use of covered versions and one year of updates, with optional paid extensions. A separate Site licence covers an organization for an annual or multi-year term.
Earlier MIT releases keep their licence and receive security fixes in the old repository. Current PrimeVue development uses the PrimeUI licence.
Strengths
- Design tokens and presets connect several application controls.
- Layered composition offers different levels of implementation control.
- Eligible Community users receive the full core component set.
Watch out for
- Current releases require a licence key; free Community eligibility must be renewed annually.
- PrimeVue 5 uses a different root-font baseline from older releases.
- Earlier MIT releases receive security fixes rather than new feature development.
Best for
- Vue teams establishing a consistent application interface
