What it does

Procreate Dreams is an iPad animation app combining drawn frames, keyframes, imported video and audio. Flipbook supports multiple drawing tracks, while touch-based Performing records motion or effects during playback. It is a one-time purchase, listed at US$12.99 with regional pricing through the App Store.

Draw the changing pose and time its hold

Tap Plus, then Flipbook to enter Draw & Paint. Draw the first pose, add frames and compare nearby drawings with onion skins. A frame’s duration can be entered numerically or changed with its handles. Multi-select adjusts several holds together.

For a waving character, redraw the changing hand while keyframes move or scale a background. Tracks let those different kinds of motion coexist with imported sound and footage.

Choose the handoff

Share exports MP4, an animated GIF or a PNG sequence. The standard movie export uses the project’s frame rate, duration and resolution. A DRM project copy retains the arrangement, but full undo history requires the separate sharing option from the Theater.

Track counts and video render limits vary by iPad. Large PNG sequences and project copies with extensive history also need substantial storage.

Strengths

  • Drawn frames and keyframed movement share a timeline
  • Frame handles can change several selected holds together
  • Exports movies, image sequences and editable project copies

Watch out for

  • Track and video limits depend on the iPad
  • Large frame sequences and full-history projects use considerable storage

Best for

  • Hand-drawn iPad animation
  • Short scenes mixing illustration, footage and sound
