What it does
Prometheus Alertmanager receives alerts from Prometheus and other client applications, deduplicates and groups related alerts, and routes notifications to configured receivers such as email, PagerDuty, OpsGenie, or webhooks. Operators can silence alerts for a period, configure inhibition rules to suppress lower-priority notifications, and run Alertmanager instances in a high-availability cluster. It is a deployable open-source component, not a hosted metrics-monitoring service.
Alertmanager handles the notification side of an alerting workflow: configure Prometheus or another client to send alerts, then define a routing tree that groups related alerts and directs them to the appropriate receiver. For example, grouping by cluster and alert name can consolidate many instance alerts into one notification. Inhibition rules can suppress related notifications when a higher-level alert is active, while time-bounded silences mute alerts matching selected labels. Operators can manage silences through the web interface and configure high availability with multiple instances. The project provides release binaries and container images; its API is version 2, and amtool is bundled with releases.
Strengths
- Deduplicates, groups, and routes alerts to configured notification receivers.
- Provides silences and inhibition rules to control notification noise.
- Supports high-availability clustering and an API for integrations.
Watch out for
- Requires an alert source and operator-configured routing, receivers, and notification integrations; it does not create metric alerting rules itself.
- Must be installed and operated as a software component rather than used as a hosted monitoring service.
Best for
- Teams using Prometheus that need to route and manage alert notifications.
- Operators who need grouped notifications, temporary silences, or inhibition rules.
- Deployments that want an open-source alert-management component with high-availability support.
