What it does
Proton Mail is a Swiss email service with free and paid accounts. Proton documents zero-access storage encryption, tracker blocking, aliases and tools for moving an existing mailbox.
Easy Switch gives an established inbox a gradual migration route into Proton Mail, importing messages, contacts and calendars. Free covers basic mail; paid plans add storage, addresses and custom domains. Web, desktop and mobile access are listed.
For a contact outside Proton, the password-protected message option works on all plans. Set a password and share it separately; the recipient opens a link in a browser. The protected message expires within 28 days and permits up to five replies. Re-enable encryption when sending a further reply.
Prepare account recovery as well. An email or SMS password reset can restore sign-in while leaving old encrypted messages locked; recovering that data needs an appropriate prepared method, such as the recovery phrase.
