What it does
The Public Domain Review introduces historical visual works through collections and essays. Its Public Domain Image Archive adds image browsing by artist, century, style, theme and tag within the same project family.
The Image Archive offers three ways into the collection: Catalogue for a focused search, Infinite View for visual browsing and Shuffle for unexpected finds. Sort by “Size: Largest to smallest” when a design needs a larger file. Links to the accompanying Public Domain Review article and the holding institution help explain where an image came from.
The Rudolf Kalvach postcard collection, for example, supplies images from his 1907 Wiener Werkstätte designs. Its Download guidance says to save the image with a right-click or follow the original institution for a higher-resolution copy. Separate labels identify the rights in the underlying work and the digital copy. Most archive images are public domain worldwide, but country-specific exceptions and attribution requirements are marked. PDR’s contemporary articles have separate reuse terms.
The archive is free to use. Some older entries have smaller files; the original institution is the route to investigate when the available download is too small.
Strengths
- Catalogue, Infinite View and Shuffle suit different ways of finding an image.
- Collection articles connect unusual images with their historical context.
Watch out for
- Some older archive files are below 1,500 pixels; a larger copy may require the original institution.
Best for
- Designers seeking historical illustrations, prints and photographs with context
