What it does

Pulumi is an infrastructure-as-code platform that lets teams define cloud resources in general-purpose programming languages and connect those definitions to delivery pipelines. In CI, a pull request can produce a preview for review, while a merge can trigger an infrastructure update. Pulumi handles the infrastructure plan and deployment step; it is not itself a general-purpose source-code build runner.

Put infrastructure changes through review

Pulumi’s GitHub Actions guide describes a trunk-based workflow: a pull request runs pulumi preview so reviewers can inspect proposed resource changes, and a merge to the main branch can run pulumi up to apply them. A minimal job sequence therefore looks like this:

pulumi preview
pulumi up

The workflow needs a Pulumi project, cloud credentials, and a state backend. Treat preview output as an infrastructure change set and review replacements or deletions before allowing an automated apply.

This is useful when teams want infrastructure edits to use code review and pipeline controls rather than an operator making every cloud change by hand. It complements a CI system that builds and tests the application; Pulumi’s role is provisioning and updating cloud resources. The pricing page lists a no-cost plan for individuals and open-source projects plus paid team plans, so check current resource and collaboration limits before adopting it across an organization.

Strengths

  • The documented GitHub Actions workflow separates pull-request previews from deployment updates.
  • Infrastructure can be defined in supported programming languages and managed through a stack state.
  • The pricing page lists a free plan and paid team plans.

Watch out for

  • Pulumi manages infrastructure updates, but application build and test execution still belong to the surrounding CI workflow.
  • Automated `up` steps can change cloud resources, so the preview and credentials deserve review.

Best for

  • Reviewing cloud infrastructure changes in pull requests
  • Applying approved infrastructure updates from a CI workflow
