What it does

Pyxel Edit is a pixel-art editor built around reusable tile references. Editing one tile updates its rotated and flipped instances throughout a map. The paid beta includes frame animation and sprite-sheet export; an older unsupported free version remains available without animation.

Keep repeating tiles connected

Pyxel Edit can identify the distinct tiles in an imported tileset image or level mockup. You can rearrange those tiles while retaining their links, then revise one tile to update every copy. This is useful when checking joins and repeated details across a level.

Maps export as XML, JSON or plain text, and a keypress repeats the last export after further edits. Animations use onion skins and export as sprite sheets or GIFs.

Know which version you are buying

The current paid application is a beta. A purchase includes future versions without another charge, but the developer does not guarantee that development will be completed. The licence permits use on computers you own and cannot be shared.

The free download is the unsupported 0.2.22c beta. It has an older interface and lacks animation and other paid-version features, so it is suitable only if those omissions fit the project.

Strengths

  • Rotated and flipped instances remain linked to their tile
  • Imports can identify unique tiles automatically
  • The last tilemap export can be repeated with one keypress

Watch out for

  • The paid application remains beta with no completion guarantee
  • The old free release is unsupported and lacks animation

Best for

  • Artists refining tile seams in a level mockup
  • Game prototypes that need structured tilemap data
