What it does
qpdf performs structural, content-preserving PDF transformations. It can manipulate page lists, combine documents, and change PDF features such as linearization or password protection.
Use qpdf after generating a valid PDF when the remaining job concerns page order, object structure, linearisation or document protection. The command reads an input, applies options and writes a separate output; inspection commands instead return information without an output PDF. Choose replacement deliberately: --replace-input writes a temporary result and then replaces the source, with separate warning/error handling. qpdf does not render pages or convert PDFs into Word or image formats.
Strengths
- Addresses PDF structure without requiring a content-editor workflow.
Watch out for
- Does not render PDFs or convert them to other document formats.
Best for
- Scripted PDF restructuring and inspection
