What it does
QuantConnect brings research notebooks, market datasets, backtesting and strategy deployment into one programming platform. A free account supports historical research and backtesting. Paid plans add resources, local coding tools, collaboration and live deployment options.
Examine the idea before deploying it
The research example uses QuantBook to add an equity, retrieve daily history and chart an indicator. A notebook is a useful place to inspect the data and assumptions before moving the logic into a backtest. QuantConnect models fees, slippage and spreads, but simulated results still depend on the strategy and inputs.
What Free covers
| Plan | Research and development access |
|---|---|
| Free | Unlimited backtesting, one research node, one backtest node and up to 200 projects |
| Researcher | Adds local coding through VS Code or the CLI and higher limits |
| Team | Adds project collaboration |
Free includes minute, hourly and daily data; tick and second resolution begin on paid plans. Free has no live-trading nodes. Create Free Account starts registration. Compute resources and some datasets are separately configurable, so compare the complete plan before subscribing. Paper testing and live deployment are separate stages, and neither removes investment risk.
Strengths
- Research notebooks connect directly with historical data and backtesting
- Free-plan limits distinguish research capacity from live deployment
Watch out for
- Free excludes live-trading nodes and tick or second data
- Some datasets and compute resources add to the subscription cost
Best for
- Programmers researching systematic investment strategies
- Teams moving research code into controlled testing
