What it does
Qubes OS is an open-source security-oriented desktop system using Xen-based virtual machines to separate applications and trust domains.
Qubes makes separation a daily desktop workflow. Its documentation describes compartments for different purposes and trust levels, with visible window borders and isolated network or USB roles. Plan what belongs in each compartment before adopting the system. Disposable environments and shared templates have different lifetimes, which affects where work should be saved. This is an operating-system change with hardware and administration requirements, not a small privacy extension for an existing browser.
Strengths
- Purpose and trust-based desktop compartments
- Device-isolation and disposable-environment options
Best for
- Experienced users prepared to operate a compartmentalized desktop
