What it does
Quirkos is qualitative text-analysis software for coding supplied documents, transcripts and open-ended survey responses. Its visual code canvas, subgroup comparisons and contextual exports support small research datasets, with Cloud collaboration and a separate permanent offline purchase route.
From a transcript to a set of coded quotations
In Quirkos Web, sign in and choose + New Project, then name and create the project. Use Import in the upper-left menu to add the text files. Right-click the canvas to make a topic bubble and give it a name, description and color. Select a passage and drag it onto the bubble; click-to-code is also available. Double-click a bubble to see its quotations across the project.
Query View filters material by respondent properties, survey answers or coder. Side-by-side comparisons keep quotations visible, while Overlap View shows themes coded together. Highlighted Word documents and spreadsheet exports provide ways to share the coded material outside Quirkos.
Cloud or local access
Cloud rates vary by eligibility:
| Eligibility | Monthly equivalent, billed annually |
|---|---|
| Student | USD 5 |
| Academic or nonprofit | USD 13 |
| Public sector | USD 17 |
| Commercial | USD 23 |
UK/EU VAT is additional. Cloud's 14-day trial starts billing automatically unless canceled in the Web app's Account tab. A permanent Quirkos 3 license works locally without registration or internet access. Automated transcription costs extra after 100 trial minutes.
Strengths
- Shows codes visually and compares subsets alongside supporting quotations.
- Exports highlighted source documents and coded project material for further review.
Watch out for
- Live synchronized collaboration requires Cloud access; the offline route exchanges separate project files.
- Continued automated transcription is an additional purchase.
Best for
- Researchers conducting close qualitative analysis of small supplied text datasets
