What it does

Temaki is an open-source expansion pack for Maki, used in Rapid and related mapping projects. Its solid SVG symbols cover map features and are designed around 15-pixel pins and larger preset labels.

The preview page shows each named symbol at 15 and 40 pixels. It includes specific mapping concepts such as bicycle repair, boat ramps and drinking-water taps, which can be useful when a general interface set lacks the required place or amenity.

Get the public repository or the @rapideditor/temaki package. The package contains individual icons, data and prebuilt files in dist. For custom additions, the contributor guide uses Bun: clone the project, install dependencies, then run bun run all to check the artwork and rebuild the spritesheets.

Temaki follows much of Maki’s design approach, favoring simple dark shapes and culturally neutral symbols. It only supplies 15-pixel versions, with no separate 11-pixel set. Its authors also describe the artwork as somewhat larger and less tidy than Maki, so the two collections are not exact visual matches. The project uses the CC0 public-domain dedication.

Strengths

  • Covers detailed places, amenities and mapping features.
  • Provides individual SVGs and generated sprites in a public package.

Watch out for

  • There are no dedicated 11-pixel variants.
  • Proportions and finish can differ from Maki’s artwork.

Best for

  • Map editors extending a Maki-based symbol set.
  • OpenStreetMap projects needing specific place and amenity icons.
