What it does
RaspiBlitz provides software and setup guides for running a Bitcoin full node on a Raspberry Pi. You can add LND or Core Lightning for Lightning payments, or run Bitcoin alone. The software is open source under the MIT licence; you supply compatible hardware and storage, or buy a prebuilt device from a third party.
Choose the node you want to run
During setup, select LND, Core Lightning or NONE if you only want Bitcoin. RaspiBlitz can later run both Lightning implementations. Its migration options can move an existing node to different hardware, while optional apps add services to the same device.
From SD card to running node
- Prepare a Raspberry Pi 4 or 5 with at least 1 TB of external storage.
- Download FATPACK for the web interface and bundled apps, or MINIMAL for an installation configured through SSH, a remote terminal connection.
- Flash the image to an SD card of at least 64 GB, attach Ethernet and boot the Pi.
- Connect to the local address shown by the device and follow FRESHSETUP for a new installation.
A normal home setup includes substantial download and blockchain synchronization time. The setup can erase existing drive contents, so the storage choice matters.
Recovery needs more than a seed phrase
RaspiBlitz explains that a current node rescue backup or the appropriate seed and channel backup is needed for Lightning recovery. It warns that an outdated rescue backup can put channel funds at risk. Running the software means maintaining the device and its backups yourself.
Strengths
- Choice of LND, Core Lightning or Bitcoin-only operation
- Separate FATPACK and MINIMAL images suit different installation needs
- Migration files can carry node data to replacement hardware
Watch out for
- Requires a Raspberry Pi 4 or 5 and at least 1 TB of external storage for the standard setup
- Fresh setup can delete data on the attached drive
- Lightning recovery depends on keeping suitable, current backups
Best for
- People building and maintaining their own Bitcoin node
- Lightning operators choosing between LND and Core Lightning
