What it does

RBC Royal Bank combines Canadian account balances, bill payments and transfers with mobile cheque deposits. NOMI adds spending and saving views. The bank offers paid everyday accounts and a monthly-fee waiver on Advantage Banking for eligible students and people aged 24 or younger.

Deposit a cheque from your phone

In RBC Mobile, open Move Money, then Deposit a Cheque. Follow the prompts to photograph the cheque and choose the account receiving it. RBC may hold deposited funds, and a released hold does not guarantee that a cheque will clear. A returned cheque can still be reversed.

The app also handles bills and transfers. NOMI provides spending and saving views; rewards tasks use the separate Avion Rewards app.

Account costs and eligibility

Day to Day Banking costs C$4 a month and includes 12 debit transactions. Additional debits cost C$1.25 each. There is no minimum balance requirement, and statements without cheque images are free; paper statements with images cost C$3.50 a month.

Advantage Banking has no monthly fee for customers aged 24 or younger, or qualifying full-time postsecondary students of any age. The student rule requires at least 60% of the usual course load, and RBC may request proof. This account includes unlimited debit transactions.

Online applicants for the youth/student account must be at least 13, or 14 in Quebec, and have valid government-issued photo ID. Existing customers sign in with their client card number and password. RBC Mobile is available for iOS and Android.
