What it does

rclone is a local command-line client for managing files across cloud-storage backends and local filesystems. After a remote is configured, commands such as `copy`, `sync` and `ls` use a consistent source-and-destination syntax. Developers can use it to move build artifacts, test fixtures or archives between a workstation and object storage, or between two remote services. rclone moves data; it does not provide the storage account or set its price.

Configure a remote, then copy deliberately

Run rclone config to create a named remote for the storage provider you already use. The setup process depends on that provider's authentication method, and the resulting configuration stores remote details and credentials. The official guide lists many backends, from object storage to file-sync services and local disks.

For example, if a build creates a dist/ directory, a configured remote named artifacts could receive it with rclone copy ./dist artifacts:releases/my-app/. This copies the directory contents and skips files rclone considers identical; it does not delete files already at the destination. The example is illustrative and was not run for this listing.

Prefer copy while learning. sync is different: it makes the destination match the source and can remove destination files that are not present at the source. rclone's documentation recommends the interactive option while learning to avoid accidental data loss. Read the chosen backend's authentication and feature notes before automating a transfer, because credentials and storage charges belong to that external service.

rclone is published under the MIT License and the client installs as a standalone program for Linux, macOS and Windows. The project site also links to a separate Rclone Business offering; this entry is about the open-source CLI, not that service.

Strengths

  • Uses one command-line model for transfers between local filesystems and many supported storage backends.
  • The copy command skips files judged identical and does not delete destination files, making it a safer starting point than synchronization.

Watch out for

  • Remote credentials and permissions must be configured for the specific storage provider; rclone does not supply the storage account.
  • The sync operation can remove destination-only files, so its direction and target should be checked before use.

Best for

  • Copying build or release artifacts to an existing object-storage bucket
  • Moving test fixtures or archives between local storage and cloud backends
  • Automating file transfers across multiple storage providers
