What it does

Recurly supports subscription pricing, recurring invoices and multiple payment gateways. Businesses can configure trials and renewal terms, build different offers and connect checkout to their applications. Its plan editor and gateway controls suit teams that need to define both billing behavior and how payments are routed. A 90-day trial is available before paid billing.

In Configuration > Plans > New Plan, set the customer-facing name and unique integration code. Choose the trial, setup fee, billing period, commitment length and renewal behavior. A monthly invoice need not mean a one-month commitment.

Price segments provide alternative prices within a plan's currency. Your application chooses the segment and passes it with the subscription; Recurly does not choose it automatically. Keep the default price and your selection rule aligned.

Starter is listed at $249 per month plus 0.9% of billing volume, with the first $40,000 of monthly billings included before the volume fee applies. A 90-day free trial is advertised. All Access is quote-based and lists a $1 million billing-volume minimum; its negotiated terms need to be checked against the business's requirements.

Match the gateway to the business

The gateway choices depend on the company's country in Business Entity settings. Add the intended gateway, enter its integration credentials and select the card types the merchant account can accept. These credentials are separate from a provider's ordinary virtual-terminal login.

Test Configuration checks the connection. It does not by itself establish that every currency, card or subscription flow is configured as intended. Recurly's gateway guide explains provider-specific requirements such as authorization behavior and webhook settings.

When several gateways are enabled, the default routing considers card type and currency, then uses the first suitable gateway added. Businesses needing a different priority should review the custom routing controls. Each gateway can also be enabled or disabled through its status setting.

These controls make Recurly useful for a subscription operation that needs explicit billing terms and payment behavior. They also require the team to own the plan rules, merchant-provider setup and customer-segmentation logic.

Strengths

  • Plan settings distinguish billing frequency from commitment and renewal terms.
  • Price segments allow multiple offers without duplicating the underlying plan.
  • Gateway status and routing controls support more than one payment provider.

Watch out for

  • The business must supply its own rule for assigning price segments.
  • Default routing among suitable gateways follows the order in which they were added.
  • Available gateways depend on the business country and provider setup.

Best for

  • Subscription businesses managing trials and renewal terms
  • Teams offering segmented subscription prices
  • Businesses coordinating several supported payment gateways
