What it does
The European Commission’s PVGIS provides photovoltaic performance and solar-radiation calculations for grid-connected, tracking and off-grid systems.
The linked PVGIS 5 interface separates grid-connected, tracking and off-grid estimates. Choose location, radiation database, technology, mounting and losses; grid-connected power uses kWp, while off-grid entries use Wp plus battery/consumption in Wh and cutoff percent. Module azimuth is 0° south, −90° east and +90° west. Built-in terrain horizons cover hills/mountains, not nearby houses or trees; custom TXT/CSV horizon inputs are available. Review database/horizon inputs with modelled yield and variability, then retain CSV/JSON or a displayed-result PDF; TMY also offers EPW. The official manual says use is free without registration and documents web services. The Commission separately links a newer PVGIS 6 interface; these controls describe PVGIS 5.
Strengths
- Separate grid-connected, tracking and off-grid models
- Radiation data and calculated output can be exported
Best for
- Comparing photovoltaic system assumptions at a location
