What it does

RenderMan is Pixar’s renderer for animation and visual effects, with layered materials, physical lighting and host integrations. Paid licences cover commercial production, while renewable free licences support non-commercial work.

RenderMan’s MaterialX Lama system builds a surface by combining and layering material networks. Its physical lights expose colour temperature, exposure and IES profiles, while light filters add further shaping. For compositing, separate render passes can isolate diffuse light, shadows, depth or object identities, with DeepEXR and Cryptomatte support.

The renderer connects to Maya, Houdini, Katana and Blender. RenderMan XPU combines CPU and GPU resources, and USD Hydra support connects it to workflows such as Houdini Solaris. Checkpointing allows an interrupted render to resume, while progressive passes provide an earlier view of the image.

Commercial and learning access

A commercial licence costs USD 595 and includes Tractor render management. Annual maintenance is USD 250 per licence and covers support, upgrades and beta access. Licences can serve an artist seat or batch rendering; commercial floating licences allow use across a network.

Free Non-Commercial RenderMan covers personal projects, education, evaluation and research. Register a forum account, confirm the email and complete the short survey to reach the installer. Each account can obtain two machine-bound licences, renewed online every 120 days. This edition requires a RenderMan credit, supports only the current release and excludes Stylized Looks. Direct commercial work requires commercial licensing.

Strengths

  • DeepEXR, Cryptomatte and separate render passes support compositing.
  • Checkpointing resumes interrupted rendering.

Watch out for

  • Free licences need online renewal every 120 days.
  • Non-Commercial RenderMan excludes Stylized Looks and older releases.

Best for

  • Animation look development
  • Visual-effects rendering pipelines
