What it does
Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes provides searches for genera, species and references alongside classification and collection information.
Choose the database appropriate to your question: a fish name, a genus or the underlying literature. Classification and journal links support deeper follow-up. Record the catalog version with a lookup, since the page describes a continuously updated reference.
The search includes an option for unavailable names. Note whether you used it, since finding a name in a nomenclatural catalogue does not by itself mean it is currently accepted.
