What it does

Retrospend tracks personal expenses, category budgets and shared costs, with asset and liability records alongside spending. You can create a free hosted account without a payment card or run the GPL-licensed application on your own server.

A grocery budget can show both the amount left for the month and the daily pace that would keep spending within it. Retrospend also lets fixed categories follow their actual spending through Peg to actual. Use Copy from Last Month to reuse allocations, or explore changes in Budget Playground before applying them to the live budget.

To begin, sign up and use + Add Expense in the top bar for an amount, category and date. Open Budget in the sidebar to set category limits or a global limit. Settings lets you change the home currency and the day your financial month starts.

Review a bank statement

Open Settings > Import. PDF and XLSX statements use AI extraction; CSV imports must match Retrospend's own format. Before saving, edit cells, deselect unwanted rows or change the currency in bulk. Matching existing expenses are flagged and unchecked automatically, although you can select them again. This is also the place to exclude transfers or cash withdrawals that should not become new expenses.

Strengths

  • Privacy Mode hides amounts on screen
  • Shared costs can use equal amounts, percentages or shares, and guests can review their part through a link without creating an account

Watch out for

  • Exclude from analytics removes a category from budget and dashboard calculations while keeping its transactions
  • Unanswered shared-expense requests are automatically accepted after seven days

Best for

  • Households comparing day-to-day purchases with a monthly spending allowance
