What it does
RIOT is a free desktop image optimizer for Windows, Mac and Linux with automatic optimization, batch processing and an original-versus-optimized preview.
Open files or folders and compare the original with the chosen quality, chroma and output-format settings before writing. Set metadata, aspect resizing and animation handling deliberately; a first-frame option discards motion. File handling includes overwrite, backups and deleting originals, with confirmation before destructive choices. Current 2026.10 builds cover Windows x64, Apple Silicon Mac and Linux x86_64; its Windows installer replaces classic RIOT. The provider says processing is local with no account or upload. Input and save-format support differ.
Strengths
- Live original-versus-optimized preview
- Desktop batch optimization
Watch out for
- File-handling settings can overwrite or delete originals, and first-frame conversion discards animation.
