What it does
RIPE's Routing Information Service collects BGP observations and publishes archives, a live feed and prefix-to-ASN lookup data.
Choose MRT archives for a historical routing investigation, RIS Live for near-real-time messages or RISwhois for prefix-to-ASN mappings. The archive path selects the route collector, month, file type and timestamp. A dump records the routing state at a point in time; an update file records changes over an interval. RIPE’s MRT guide documents dumps every 8 hours and updates every 5 minutes, with external parsers for analysis. Each collector file combines observations from its contributing BGP peers. Deprecated collectors retain archives but add no new data. Select the collector and time window deliberately: these are volunteer-peer routing observations, not a measurement of every network’s route or the packets taken by a client.
Strengths
- Archived and live access paths
- Community-contributed routing views
Watch out for
- Observed routing depends on participating peers
