What it does

Riseup documents a community email service with password-protected encrypted storage, Tor onion access, aliases and client support. Its help page explains account recovery and mailbox limits.

Creating a Riseup email account requires an invitation code from a trusted friend with an eligible existing account. The account help says newly created accounts cannot generate invitations, so ordinary open registration is not the access model.

Save the recovery code when setting up the mailbox. Riseup’s email overview says it cannot recover access when both the password and recovery code are lost, and explains that stored messages are decrypted on its server during authenticated use. Webmail, standard clients, aliases and Tor onion access are documented. Its community scope and storage quota make it a specific option for activist communication.

Strengths

  • Recovery requirements and storage-encryption behavior are explained plainly.
  • Tor onion access and ordinary email-client access are documented.

Watch out for

  • Losing both password and recovery code makes the stored account inaccessible.
  • The documented mailbox quota is limited.

Best for

  • Activist communities evaluating Riseup’s account and support model
