What it does
RoboFont is a macOS font editor for type designers who want to build their own production tools. It uses editable UFO3 files and exposes the font data and interface to Python. The application has a 30-day trial, with a paid Full Licence for continued use.
A font editor you can extend
RoboFont gives Python scripts access to its objects and interface, so a foundry can add controls around its own drawing and production process. UFO3 is its native working format. Mechanic distributes open-source extensions; the Extension Store separately lists commercial additions such as specialised production tools.
The Download link starts a fully functional 30-day evaluation. After that, a Full Licence gives one user unlimited-time access for a one-time fee. The licensing page lists EUR 400 per licence for quantities of one to ten, with discounts for larger purchases.
Teachers can request a free one-year student licence for a class. That educational licence cannot be extended; the separate Student License Service uses annual subscriptions. Some extensions cost extra, and the main application requires macOS.
