What it does

The Royal Shakespeare Company provides production, rehearsal and backstage photographs through its public image library. It also handles archive enquiries for pictures that are not online and separate performance-clip licences.

Browse a play and then its production year, or use Advanced Search to combine a performer, director, venue or date range. The library also accepts themes such as “crown” and “modern costume”. A Lightbox can collect images before a high-resolution request.

For a low-resolution picture, open the image, choose Download, accept the terms and select download now. Keep the copyright watermark. Personal use, private study and classroom use are free, but the classroom permission excludes online platforms and published teaching resources. Other publication, exhibition and screen uses need permission.

For larger files, select request high-res from the Lightbox and describe the intended use in the form. The public download route does not require registration; the library does not process public registration requests. If a particular staging is missing, the licensing department can search photographs outside the online selection.

Strengths

  • Search fields distinguish performers, roles, directors and production years.
  • Archive enquiries can reach photographs absent from the public library.

Watch out for

  • Free low-resolution downloads retain a copyright watermark.
  • Free classroom permission does not extend to online teaching platforms.

Best for

  • Theatre researchers comparing productions
  • Editors licensing a specific performer or staging
