What it does
Städel Museum’s Digital Collection pairs artwork records with thematic browsing, albums and related works. Public-domain images are available as free downloads, with a separate agency route for copyrighted works.
The home page can suggest artworks from three randomly chosen terms, while the search supports more deliberate research by artist, period, motif and object type. Clickable keywords let you follow a subject across different works.
Vermeer’s The Geographer has an object record with a Public Domain picture-copyright label, a credit line, painting details and audio or video material. For an eligible work, use the download icon below its image. The museum permits public-domain images to be edited and reused for any purpose and asks for credit to Städel Museum, Frankfurt am Main.
Images of copyrighted works go through Artothek and can involve additional fees. English search is supported, but some object texts remain in German where translations are unavailable.
