What it does
Scaleway Instances are cloud virtual machines with selectable CPU, memory, and storage. Create one from scratch or a template in the console, through the Instances API, or with the Scaleway CLI. The documented CLI workflow selects a project, zone, instance type, OS image, IP choice, and root volume. Instances suit testing, personal projects, development, application hosting, and production workloads.
The creation workflow exposes machine type, zone, image, IP, and root-volume choices and supports both console and scripted provisioning. Instance compute is billed hourly and stops when the VM is powered off, but attached storage and flexible IPv4 addresses continue billing until deleted. A powered-off VM and its attached resources therefore need separate cost checks.
Strengths
- Create from scratch or use an instance template, choosing zone, type, image, IP, and root volume.
- Console, Instances API, and CLI are documented creation paths.
- Compute charges pause when the instance is powered off; an estimated-cost calculator helps include attached resources.
Watch out for
- Attached storage and flexible IPv4 addresses continue billing while the VM is powered off.
- Compute charges stop only when the instance is deleted; attached resources may need separate deletion.
Best for
- Developers needing configurable VMs for test, development, web hosting, or production workloads.
- Teams automating instance setup with the Scaleway API or CLI.
