What it does

SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union helps members manage bills, deposits and account records online or by phone app. Its Free Checking account has no monthly charge or ongoing minimum balance. Membership serves California’s education community and qualifying relatives.

Follow a bill from its schedule to your records

Set a payment date for a one-off or recurring bill. SchoolsFirst pays electronically when the provider accepts it; otherwise, it posts a check at its own expense. Payment-due and confirmation alerts can help with follow-up. The statement archive holds up to seven years of statements and cleared-check images.

Mobile check deposits have a published $10,000 daily limit, subject to eligibility and change. Depositing a check does not establish when the funds become available.

Account costs and joining

Free Checking requires a $25 opening deposit and applicants must be at least 18. There is no monthly maintenance charge or ongoing checking balance requirement. Withdrawals outside SchoolsFirst and the CO-OP network cost $2, plus any operator charge.

Membership requires a separate $5 Share Savings balance. Have identification and proof of eligibility ready for an online or branch application: for example, a school employee’s recent pay stub or a retired employee’s pension statement.

Eligible groups include current and retired employees of qualifying California schools, immediate family of existing members, students in qualifying teaching programs and employees of qualifying school-service companies. Joining through education does not mean leaving when you change careers or move out of state; membership can continue.
