What it does
Schriftlabor publishes families including Bajazzo, Ordina, Gallensis, Plantago and strokeWeight. It also offers custom fonts and font production services.
The catalog makes structural differences visible before purchase. Ordina spans five widths, Bajazzo has regular and rounded branches, and Gallensis has three optical sizes. Open Gallensis’s specimen and use Paragraph, Size and Leading to compare longer text with a heading; the OT panel exposes OpenType options. This helps separate a change in reading size from simply choosing a heavier weight.
Retail listings lead to named distributors, with the available channels varying by family. Select the design and range first, then check the chosen seller’s package and licence. Schriftlabor’s own agreement counts simultaneous users, allows installations on devices controlled by the licensee or its direct employees, and treats app, webfont and redistributed digital products separately.
For print production, the agreement permits a copy to be passed to a commercial printer solely to print the document. That permission does not allow the printer to edit it or keep the font files afterwards.
Strengths
- Makes width and optical-size organisation easy to compare.
- Provides paragraph, leading and OpenType specimen controls.
- Links each retail family to its available purchase channels.
Watch out for
- Digital product embedding needs separate app, webfont or redistribution coverage.
Best for
- Editorial projects comparing structured type families
- Studios considering retail or custom font work
