What it does

Charles Schwab offers brokerage and retirement accounts, investment research and trading platforms including thinkorswim. Self-directed accounts are separate from automated or adviser-managed services. Standard individual brokerage has no opening or maintenance fee, with zero online commissions on listed stocks and ETFs and other charges by product.

Build the research case before choosing a platform

Schwab research combines Equity Ratings, independent reports, screeners and stock lists. Sector heatmaps can use a chosen time frame, while company reports add a different perspective from recent price performance. These research tools are included with a Schwab account.

Examples from the US fee schedule

Online listed-stock and ETF commissions are US$0. Options have a US$0.65 contract fee, and broker-assisted listed-stock orders add US$25. OTC stocks, some mutual funds and other products have different charges. Fund expenses and applicable transaction fees can still matter when commission is zero.

Open an Account separates brokerage, retirement and other account types. Investors outside the US use the international route, which first checks country eligibility and requires identity and residence documents. Do not assume every product is available in every country. Advisory services have their own minimums and fees.

Strengths

  • Account research includes both Schwab ratings and independent reports
  • Sector heatmaps support comparisons over a chosen time frame

Watch out for

  • Broker-assisted and some product transactions carry additional charges
  • International access depends on residence and product eligibility

Best for

  • Investors comparing US brokerage and retirement research tools
  • Eligible international investors seeking US-market account access
