What it does
ScyllaDB X Cloud is the fully managed ScyllaDB cloud product marketed for AWS and Google Cloud. Its cluster-creation workflow asks the operator to select a cloud and region, an API (CQL by default or Alternator), an encryption-key option, scaling policy, allowed client IPs, and network type. The service is aimed at data-intensive applications; it is distinct from installing and operating ScyllaDB Server yourself.
Configure the cluster before connecting an application
The official cloud guide starts with a ScyllaDB Cloud account, then creates a dedicated-VM cluster. Choose AWS or Google Cloud, a region, and either CQL (the default) or Alternator. The guide also asks you to define allowed IP addresses and decide whether the application will connect over the public internet or a private connection. An initial autoscaling policy can be configured at creation and updated later.
That sequence makes the product a reasonable candidate when an application already uses CQL drivers or needs the documented Alternator option. For an initial evaluation, the quick-start guide describes a time-limited free trial, with one trial per account, followed by a regular cluster workflow. This is a cloud service: plan the account, network access and billing choice as part of the database setup rather than treating it as a local database package.
ScyllaDB's billing documentation lists On-Demand, fixed-contract and Flex Credit options across service plans. The currently marketed product page calls the managed offering ScyllaDB X Cloud, while the setup and billing documentation still uses the broader ScyllaDB Cloud name. The exact rate for a deployment depends on its configuration; consult the live pricing materials before budgeting. No prices are quoted here.
Strengths
- Cluster configuration exposes CQL and the Alternator API as documented choices.
- The X Cloud cluster workflow includes an autoscaling policy that can be changed after deployment.
- The service supports AWS or Google Cloud deployments, including a documented option to use a customer's own cloud account.
Watch out for
- Creating a cluster requires an account and choosing allowed IP addresses and a public or private network path.
- The free trial is time-limited and the quick-start documentation limits it to one trial per account.
Best for
- Teams that want a managed ScyllaDB cluster and can select AWS or Google Cloud for deployment
- Applications that use CQL or want to evaluate ScyllaDB's documented Alternator API option
