What it does

Seafile provides native file synchronization, a virtual drive client and file sharing through an on-premise or hosted Seafile service.

Connect a Seafile client to an on-premises or hosted service, then keep a library synchronized or use the virtual drive to download files when opened. Sharing links can deliver files or collect external uploads, under the server’s permissions and policies. Community Edition is free and open source; on-premises Pro is free for up to three users, with annual licensing above that. Encrypted libraries have a mode boundary: desktop synchronization encrypts and decrypts content locally, while web access sends the password to the server for processing. File and folder names are not encrypted by that library feature.

Strengths

  • Sync and on-demand virtual drive clients
  • Folder permissions and external upload links

Watch out for

  • Requires a Seafile service and its access permissions
