What it does

SEC EDGAR provides free public access to company filings, fund disclosures and financial-statement data. Investors can search original documents by company or topic, while developers can retrieve filing histories and standardized financial facts without an API key.

Company Search accepts a company name, ticker or Central Index Key, the SEC's filer identifier. More search options lets you include, exclude or select only ownership Forms 3, 4 and 5. Use this route to locate an issuer's periodic reports; use Full Text Search for a phrase across companies, with filters for dates, filing categories and locations.

Keep the form and filing date with a figure you extract. Latest Filings and filing feeds help follow new disclosures, while mutual-fund and insurance searches provide more focused routes for those products.

Working with structured financial data

EDGAR's application programming interfaces (APIs) return filing histories and financial facts in JSON, a format software can read. They need no login or API key. A company request uses its ten-digit Central Index Key, including leading zeroes. Bulk ZIP downloads are rebuilt nightly for larger collections.

The financial-fact aggregation covers standard reporting tags that apply to the whole filing entity. Custom company tags therefore need attention in the original filing. Calendar-based comparisons also require checking each fact's reporting dates because company financial years differ.

Public document search is free and needs no account. Automated downloads must identify the organization and contact in the request header and stay within the SEC's maximum of ten requests per second.

Strengths

  • Provides original filings alongside company and full-text search
  • Offers public filing-history and financial-fact APIs without keys
  • Supplies nightly bulk archives for larger data collections

Watch out for

  • Aggregated financial facts exclude custom tags and non-entity-wide contexts
  • Automated access is limited to ten requests per second

Best for

  • Investors checking figures and disclosures in original company filings
  • Developers building analyses from filing histories and reported financial facts
