What it does
SeedSigner uses free software on a separately assembled Raspberry Pi, screen and camera to sign Bitcoin payments. It keeps signing apart from the online wallet and clears loaded seeds when powered off.
SeedSigner fits Bitcoin users who want to assemble and understand their signing equipment. The software and enclosure designs are available openly, with no software subscription or hosted wallet account. You still need to buy compatible components; the project's low-cost build concept is not a fixed retail price for a finished device.
The parts list matters. A Raspberry Pi Zero 1.3 avoids built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, while other supported boards may include them. The specified Waveshare screen must have 240 by 240 pixels. Download the image for your board, verify its signature and checksum before mounting it, then write it to a microSD card. Boards without fitted pin headers can require soldering.
SeedSigner does not retain a loaded seed after shutdown. Keep a recovery backup independent of the device. A SeedQR represents secret recovery information, so treat it like the written seed, not like a public receive address.
The independent-custody guide uses Sparrow on an online computer to coordinate a wallet. Public-key QR codes establish the wallet without copying its seed to the computer. For a payment, Sparrow prepares the transaction and displays it through Show QR. SeedSigner's Scan QR imports that transaction for inspection, including the destination, fee and change returning to your wallet. Approve PSBT authorizes it; PSBT means a partially signed Bitcoin transaction. The signed QR returns to Sparrow for broadcast once the required signatures are present.
A multisignature wallet also needs a backup of its descriptor, the configuration identifying all signing keys and how they combine. Keeping only the seed words can leave that arrangement unrecoverable. SeedSigner provides tools for checking these details, but assembling the device and preserving the recovery material remain your responsibility.
Strengths
- Published component list and verifiable software images
- QR exchange keeps transaction signing separate from the online coordinator
- Displays transaction amounts, fees and change before approval
Watch out for
- Hardware selection and possible soldering require care
- Seeds must be loaded again after shutdown
- Seed words alone are insufficient for reconstructing a multisignature wallet
Best for
- Bitcoin holders comfortable building their own signing device
- Users coordinating offline signatures through Sparrow or another compatible wallet
