What it does

Sendy is a self-hosted newsletter application for PHP and MySQL or MariaDB hosting. It supplies campaign editing, list segmentation, autoresponders, reports and client-brand access, while an external email service performs delivery. A paid license covers one installation domain; hosting and delivery are separate.

Sendy's brand structure is useful for a small agency operating several newsletters. Group a client's lists and campaigns within a brand, give that client access, and set permissions and sending limits. Custom domains can also make the tracking and web-version links use the chosen brand's domain.

Autoresponders handle timed follow-ups, annual messages or a one-off date. Rules provide a separate event-driven action: for example, a sent autoresponder can trigger a webhook, or joining one list can unsubscribe a person from another. That can remove a subscriber from an introductory list once they join the main publication.

The software is bought once and installed on the customer's hosting. That purchase covers one installation domain, and the customer also pays for hosting and the delivery service. Minor updates are included until the next major version; a later major release is a separate upgrade decision. Installation creates your own Sendy login with an email address and password. After connecting Amazon SES, add a Brand, then create its lists, import subscribers and prepare the first campaign.

  • Rules and webhooks connect list activity with other processes

Watch out for

  • The customer maintains hosting and a separate sending-service arrangement
  • Each license covers one installation domain
  • Included updates stop at the next major-version boundary

Best for

  • Small agencies able to maintain a self-hosted newsletter application
