What it does

Settle Up tracks shared expenses for travellers, flatmates and couples. Entries sync across the group, and the service calculates repayments that reduce the number of transfers. Its free version covers group expense tracking on web, Android and iOS; Premium adds receipt photos, recurring expenses and other tools.

When several flatmates take turns paying common bills, the useful record is the group ledger rather than a pile of receipts. Settle Up syncs entries so members can see the same expenses. Friends can also open a shared group link in a browser without installing the app.

Make the split match the group

The balance circles show who has contributed least. Tap a member's circle to start an expense with that person as payer. A member's default share can be set to 2 when, for example, a couple pays as one unit. Returned deposits can be entered as income to reduce the group's total spending.

Debt minimization can suggest paying someone you did not directly borrow from. Switch it off in Edit group if the group wants only direct repayments. When someone leaves, deselect their inclusion in new transactions instead of deleting their history.

Free and paid access

Option What it covers
Free Shared expense tracking, balances and CSV export, with advertising
Individual Premium Removes ads and adds receipt photos, recurring and future expenses, categories, statistics and Excel export
Group Premium Premium features for everyone in one group, with duration-based and lifetime purchases

The US iOS store lists Individual Premium at US$3.99 monthly or US$19.99 yearly. Group options include US$5.99 for one week, US$39.99 for one year and US$149.99 for lifetime access. These are US iOS prices.

For travel, a foreign-currency entry is converted into the group's currency. The transaction details let you override the rate or converted amount. That override carries into future entries until you switch back to the current rate.

Strengths

  • Default shares can represent a couple or family as one member
  • Group links let friends view balances in a browser
  • CSV export keeps a copy outside the app

Watch out for

  • Receipt photos and recurring expenses require Premium
  • Debt minimization can direct repayment to a different member

Best for

  • Flatmates sharing bills paid by different people
  • Travel groups splitting costs in more than one currency
