What it does
Seven Bank’s English site explains personal account services in Japan alongside ATM access for overseas cards. Account holders can view statements, arrange transfers and change banking settings online. Residents opening an account follow different requirements from visitors withdrawing yen with an existing foreign card.
When finding an ATM, use the locator together with the accepted-card information. A machine’s location alone does not establish what another bank’s card can do there. For overseas-issued cards, Seven Bank lists a ¥100,000 limit per withdrawal, reduced to ¥30,000 for magnetic-stripe transactions. Acceptance and fees depend on the card brand.
A Seven Bank account in Japan
Accounts are for individuals residing in Japan, with one account per customer and no business use. The English web application for foreign nationals is available from age 15; the optional debit card starts at 16. This route asks for two identity documents: a My Number document or residence certificate, plus a residence card or special permanent resident certificate. Applicants who entered Japan less than six months ago also need employment proof.
The current application notice excludes the new residence-card and special-permanent-resident-certificate formats issued from June 14, 2026, from that web route. After submitting email and personal details and the required documents, the stated cash-card delivery estimate is about two weeks.
Costs and online administration
Direct Banking access is free, with separate transaction charges. Seven Bank card deposits and balance enquiries at its ATMs are free. Cash withdrawals cost nothing from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Japan time and ¥110 outside those hours. A domestic transfer to another bank costs ¥165. Transfers within Seven Bank are free in My Seven Bank App or ¥55 through Direct Banking or an ATM.
Online administration includes changing transfer and withdrawal limits, card PIN management, notification preferences and monthly statements. Direct Banking registration requires the bank’s International Money Transfer App setup, an email address and login credentials. Accounts unused for at least two years may incur a ¥1,320 annual charge, with exceptions including balances of at least ¥10,000. Access from outside Japan can be restricted.
