What it does

ShipStation brings orders from connected stores and marketplaces into a shared shipping workspace. Staff can compare rates, print labels and apply rules to eligible orders. Paid plans vary by shipment volume, users and warehouse features; new accounts have 30 days to evaluate ShipStation before entering card details.

ShipStation helps a merchant handle dispatch across several sales channels. Orders come into one workspace for carrier selection, labels and tracking. The value for a busy team is applying repeatable shipping decisions before somebody starts printing.

Create a rule for incoming orders

An administrator or user with Configuration permission can open Account Settings > Automation > Automation Rules and choose Create a Rule. Give the rule a name, set its criteria, add the actions and save.

For example, an order tag can trigger a particular shipping service or Ship From location. All separate criteria lines must match. When a criterion accepts several stores or cities, those choices are alternatives within that criterion.

Rules run when an order first enters Awaiting Shipment or On Hold. Editing an order already awaiting shipment does not trigger them again. Use Reprocess Automation Rules when existing eligible orders need the saved rules applied.

Check the order of the rules

Rules run from the top of the list to the bottom. A later one can override an earlier rule, product default or service mapping. Put overlapping rules in a deliberate order and inspect the resulting shipping details before buying labels.

Plans and access

Plan Included users Main difference
Starter 3 Core shipping and basic automation
Standard 10 Unlimited automation, combined or split orders and basic warehouse tools
Premium 15 Advanced inventory and warehouse workflows, including routing by stock and destination

Subscriptions depend on shipment volume, billing term and country. Postage, insurance and optional extras are separate. The 30-day trial needs no card; registration asks for country, name, email, password and approximate monthly parcel volume.

The country matters for features as well as price. For example, the current plan guide says automated rate comparisons are not yet available for UK accounts.

Strengths

  • Automation can assign service, origin and other shipping details from order criteria
  • Rule order can be arranged around the merchant's fulfilment decisions

Watch out for

  • Changing an order already awaiting shipment does not automatically rerun rules
  • Advanced inventory and warehouse routing require Premium

Best for

  • Multichannel merchants standardizing dispatch across a shipping team
