What it does

Polaris is Shopify’s UI framework built on web components for its app surfaces. Public references cover App Home, admin, checkout, customer accounts and point of sale, each with its own available components. The guides are free to read and include code for layouts, forms and event handling.

The first Polaris decision is where the app appears. App Home (iframe) uses App Bridge and Polaris inside the Shopify admin. App Home (UI extension) uses a Preact-based extension. Other references cover actions and blocks within admin, checkout, customer accounts and Point of Sale.

After selecting the surface, open Using web components. Its examples show Preact state, labelled fields, input events and modal commands. The s-form component tracks changed inputs through their names and default values. Commands can show, hide or toggle a target component without a separate JavaScript handler.

Components are not interchangeable across every surface: each extension context has its own subset and available interfaces. The public documentation needs no login. Building and distributing an actual Shopify app is a separate developer workflow from reading the reference.

Strengths

  • Surface-specific references identify the available components
  • Examples cover forms, state changes and modal commands
  • Shared guidance explains layouts, icons and event handling

Watch out for

  • Component availability varies by Shopify surface

Best for

  • Designers and developers creating Shopify app interfaces
