What it does

Shutter is a free, open-source screenshot application for Linux. It captures selected areas, windows, desktops, menus and tooltips, then provides cropping, annotation, censoring and automatically incremented step markers in its built-in editor.

Choose Menu or Tooltip capture to start a configurable countdown, then expose the interface state during the delay. Region capture allows a selection to be moved, resized and zoomed before capture.

The editor crops by a drawn region or entered dimensions. Text, arrows and shapes have adjustable colours, fonts and line widths, while Auto-Increment Shape adds successive step numbers. Censor and pixelation tools obscure selected details.

Shutter can save the result or upload it and produce a formatted link. Its website-capture route depends on gnome-web-photo. The application is free software under GPL version 3 or later.

Strengths

  • Can delay capture to include menus and tooltips.
  • Includes automatic step markers and a built-in annotation editor.

Watch out for

  • The application targets Linux.
  • Website capture depends on the additional gnome-web-photo component.

Best for

  • Linux users preparing interface instructions and annotated screenshots.
