What it does

Houdini is a procedural 3D application for modelling, effects, environments and animation. Editable node networks can become reusable assets, with Solaris for USD scenes and Karma rendering. Free Apprentice access is limited to personal non-commercial work; paid editions cover other production uses.

Each Houdini node records an operation, and connected nodes form an editable recipe. Attributes pass through that network, so an upstream change can alter later geometry or simulation. A network can also become a reusable Digital Asset with exposed controls; Houdini Engine brings compatible assets into hosts such as Maya, Unreal and Unity.

Solaris handles USD-based layout and lighting, Karma renders the scene, KineFX covers character work, and simulation tools cover effects such as fluids, destruction and cloth. Licence choice determines which production setting those tools can serve.

Edition Main scope
Apprentice Free personal and non-commercial learning
Indie Limited-commercial FX tools for businesses below USD 100,000 annual revenue; up to three licences per studio
Core Commercial modelling, lighting, rigging, animation and game work
FX Commercial animation and effects, including simulation tools
Education Non-commercial study and teaching, with student or school eligibility

To activate Apprentice after installation, leave Install my free Houdini Apprentice license selected and choose Next. It saves its own scene and asset formats, limits renders to 1920×1080 and watermarks formats other than .picnc. It cannot share a commercial or Indie pipeline, use third-party renderers, or send its Digital Assets to Houdini Engine. Its free licence renews every 30 days and needs internet access for that renewal.

Strengths

  • Node networks retain editable operations and attribute flows.
  • Digital Assets can expose procedural controls in supported host applications.
  • Solaris and Karma connect scene layout, lighting and rendering.

Watch out for

  • Apprentice cannot join a commercial or Indie pipeline.
  • Apprentice limits rendering to 1920×1080 and watermarks most output formats.
  • Free Apprentice licensing requires monthly online renewal.

Best for

  • Procedural environments
  • Simulation workflows
