What it does
Simplygon provides mesh reduction, remeshing and level-of-detail tools for game production. Its annual game-title licence includes the SDK, integrations, unlimited seats and processing. A requested 30-day evaluation is limited to internal testing and does not permit commercial content production.
A current Python tutorial shows a complete folder-processing route: load each FBX file, create a Triangle Reducer pipeline, set its target ratio and write the processed file to an output folder. The example uses Simplygon 10.4.446.0 and halves the triangle count, then compares the models and wireframes. Its author identifies visible normal changes rather than treating the numerical reduction as proof of equal appearance.
The same guide recommends deviation or screen-size targets for varied assets, because one triangle ratio can reduce different models unevenly. Several reduction pipelines can produce a sequence of detail levels. The SDK also exposes remeshing, material merging, geometry culling and character-related processing, with C++, C# and Python interfaces.
File support has specific boundaries. The current SDK format guide says its FBX route does not support animation and has limited custom-material support. glTF files with unsupported required extensions produce an error, while the USD file route supports UsdPreviewSurface materials and excludes blend shapes.
The title licence is annual even when an eligible independent studio splits payments quarterly. Indie eligibility considers company-wide revenue and operating expenses, including a parent entity where applicable. The evaluation agreement permits internal demonstration and testing; continued use of evaluation-created content depends on promptly obtaining the comprehensive licence. The installation documentation provides a licence-key application and a Windows deployment route.
Strengths
- The SDK exposes processing through C++, C# and Python interfaces.
- Documented quality targets extend beyond a fixed triangle percentage.
- The annual title offer includes unlimited seats and processing for that title.
Watch out for
- The published commercial offer is charged per game title per year.
- The documented FBX file route does not preserve animation.
- The evaluation licence excludes commercial content production.
Best for
- Game teams building repeatable asset-reduction pipelines
- Technical artists generating and reviewing multiple detail levels
