What it does

Sketchbook provides desktop and mobile drawing applications. It combines natural-style brushes with layers, blend modes, rulers, curve guides and stroke assistance.

On mobile, open the Gallery from the canvas menu, then choose New Sketch for a blank canvas or New from Image to draw over an existing picture. Albums organize related work; select several thumbnails and use Move To to put them in another album. Desktop files instead use Finder or File Explorer.

For delivery, choose Share/Export, then Export to Files to save a copy or Share to send it to another app. Sketchbook TIFF preserves the application's layer data; PSD carries layers into other editors, though some Sketchbook features may change. PNG and JPG provide flattened images. Batch export is available from the Gallery, but it does not support PSD.

The mobile app has free drawing features and an optional one-time Premium Bundle. Premium adds brush importing and creation, clipping masks, layer groups and PDF export. Sketchbook Pro for Windows and Mac is sold separately as a perpetual store purchase; organizations can also buy annual licences. The ordinary drawing app does not require a Sketchbook account.

Strengths

  • Rulers and curves support controlled line work.
  • Symmetry tools include vertical, horizontal and radial modes.

Watch out for

  • Mobile brush importing, layer groups and PDF export require the Premium Bundle.
  • PSD is unavailable for batch export from the mobile Gallery.

Best for

  • Illustration thumbnails
  • Stylus-based drawing
