What it does

The State Library of Western Australia’s pictorial collection includes photographs, postcards, slides, albums and other visual material. Its holdings document people, transport, industry and communities, with a digitized subset in the catalogue.

For an image copy, note the catalogue title or call number. On the order form, select Images, add the reference and specify the intended use at checkout. Staff check rights and access conditions before sending payment instructions. Standard image copies are TIFF files at 300 dpi, with a 25 cm long edge.

The Library lists up to 15 working days for standard reproduction orders. Electronic delivery has no extra delivery charge, but the image copy itself is paid. Download links last 14 days.

For research beyond the digitised selection, the physical card index covers locality, subject and personal names. Copyright, donor and cultural conditions can affect supply and reuse. The Library’s Creative Commons policy does not apply one licence to every historical photograph: its preferred terms for new owned collection material differ from its own publications, and public-domain material is not relicensed under Creative Commons.

Strengths

  • Physical locality, subject and name indexes extend research beyond the online selection.
  • Image-copy orders specify TIFF format, resolution and output dimensions.

Watch out for

  • Emailed file links expire after 14 days; redelivery may incur a charge.

Best for

  • Editors illustrating Western Australian communities and history
