What it does

Zephyr is SmartBear's Jira-native test-management product. It organizes test cases, test cycles, plans and execution history inside Jira, and connects testing progress to work items and release readiness. The current product family includes the former Zephyr Scale product under the Zephyr name, with editions that add test automation and AI-assisted workflows.

Organize tests around Jira work

Use the Jira app to create or import test cases, group them into cycles or plans, and execute those cases as a release or sprint is tested. The current product pages describe manual execution, test history, traceability and reports, with additional no-code automation in the higher editions. Teams can also connect CI and automation frameworks such as Jenkins, Bamboo, JUnit or Robot Framework.

The former Zephyr Scale name now maps to the current Zephyr product; SmartBear's docs distinguish Zephyr from Zephyr Essential, the latter succeeding Zephyr Squad. Confirm the edition and Jira hosting model before planning a migration, because the vendor documents differences among editions and Cloud versus Data Center. The Marketplace offers Standard and Advanced editions with monthly or annual billing and a trial; exact totals depend on the Jira instance's user count.

Strengths

  • Test cases, cycles, plans and execution history are managed within Jira and can be traced to work items.
  • The current product offers manual testing, reporting and optional no-code automation in one Jira workflow.
  • The listing exposes a REST API and integrations with CI and test automation frameworks.

Watch out for

  • It is a Jira app, and edition and hosting differences can change which features are available.

Best for

  • Jira teams that need to plan test cycles, execute manual checks and connect outcomes to software work.
  • QA groups adding test automation or cross-project reporting to an existing Jira process.
  • Organizations evaluating a migration from the former Zephyr Scale product.
