What it does

smartocto provides content analytics, newsroom dashboards, notifications and A/B testing for headlines, introductions and images. Historical reports help editors examine articles and audience interests beyond the current news cycle. Access is arranged for the organization, with no per-seat charge.

smartocto separates a live newsroom view from an archive review. Realtime follows stories as they attract attention and supplies notifications; Insights examines articles, authors and topics after publication, including longer-lived coverage. Its editorial tools also include headline, introduction and image experiments.

Run a headline comparison with Tentacles

Open Tentacles with its lower-right switch, then select the red or green circle beside a headline and choose Start A/B Test. In the sidebar, choose the headline or teaser field and enter alternative text in the B field. The plus control adds more alternatives, and the preview icon lets you inspect the original and changed version before starting the test.

Test duration depends on traffic. A quieter homepage takes longer to gather enough visits, so experiments on different stories need not finish together.

Access is arranged with smartocto and uses credentials supplied by the organization's administrator. The company charges for the product but does not charge by seat or limit the number of users. Request a demo to discuss the newsroom's reporting and testing requirements.

Strengths

  • Combines current and historical editorial reporting with content tests.
  • Provides separate tools for dashboards, newsroom targets and notifications.

Watch out for

  • Headline-test duration depends on the amount of traffic reaching the tested content.

Best for

  • Newsrooms connecting audience questions with editorial reporting and experiments
