What it does
SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor (SAM) tracks server and application health across on-premises, hybrid, and cloud environments. It collects indicators such as CPU, memory, disk use, response time, and availability, then correlates server and application metrics to help locate performance problems. The product includes application templates and capacity-planning views for teams operating a SolarWinds Platform environment. It is a separate SolarWinds product from the SolarWinds Observability SaaS listing, although SolarWinds also offers SAM capabilities within its self-hosted observability package.
Start from the monitored node
SAM is for teams that need to see application behavior beside the health of its host. Add the servers and applications in scope, then use an included template for a supported service or application to collect indicators such as availability, CPU, memory, disk use, and response time. SolarWinds describes more than 250 prebuilt application templates and a cross-stack view that relates server health to application behavior.
When a service slows down, use the combined metrics to distinguish an application-level symptom from a saturated host or storage resource. For capacity work, review historical CPU, memory, and storage use and configure threshold warnings before resources are exhausted. These views support diagnosis; a high metric or alert still requires an operator to investigate and choose a fix.
SAM is a self-hosted SolarWinds Platform module and is also available within SolarWinds Observability Self-Hosted. The existing SolarWinds Observability SaaS record describes the separate cloud-delivered offering, not this SAM module. SolarWinds offers a 30-day product trial and routes buyers to a quote; its licensing documentation distinguishes node-based and component-based licensing, so deployment size affects purchase planning.
Strengths
- More than 250 prebuilt templates cover common application and server monitoring targets.
- Cross-stack correlation combines server and application indicators in a shared troubleshooting view.
- Historical resource trends and threshold alerts help teams plan capacity before bottlenecks occur.
Watch out for
- Pricing is quote-based, and licensing depends on monitored nodes or component monitors.
- SAM requires a SolarWinds Platform deployment and monitoring configuration; it is not a hosted, account-free uptime checker.
Best for
- Hybrid IT teams relating application availability and response time to server CPU, memory, and disk utilization.
- SolarWinds Platform administrators who need templates and capacity views for business applications.
